Summer with EMI Uganda — Kajjansi Airfield, 2022

Note: Ivy & I worked alternate days at EMI Uganda over summer. Here are some of our favorite photos from the times we remembered to bring along our camera.

One of the many cakes shared by the team over summer — this one is to celebrate the birthdays of Brian, David, Hedina, and Carol.
Pauline is EMI Uganda’s assistant operations manager. She grew into the role of part-time communications coordinator over our time with the team. Pauline’s positive, can-do attitude combined with a fast-learner ability make her a real joy to work with.
Daniel’s son occupies his station in the current EMI R&D office space. The larger, future R&D facility is still on paper and now perhaps some new playful comments will be circulated.
Dan is the newest EMI Uganda staff member, joining the team as Workshop manager. He brought along his set of Irish flutes to play during morning worship one Friday.
Meanwhile, over at the Workshop, the guys lead their own worship in Luganda.
Steve gives a devotion at the Workshop. Visiting Uganda for a few weeks, Steve was instrumental in founding the Workshop programme in 2016.
Hope, Henry, Grace, Julius, Steve, and Victor pose for the camera after Workshop devotions. Henry and Grace play key roles in coordination and Workshop admin, while Julius and Victor are the two senior carpenters in the Wrokshop.
Staff architect Brian presents his work for the Gem Foundation at an internal office design review.
Ivy quizzes the designers about the architecture plans, no doubt using her hands the way she learned from Matthew.
Brian reads a poem during a farewell affirmation for a fellow staff architect Ngango.
Ngango’s smile and laugh are always contagious and the team will miss his humor as he heads abroad for graduate study in architecture.
Albert (R) and Nobert (L) are brothers five or so years apart. Albert has been on staff as a structural engineer for the last few years, and Nobert joined for summer as an architecture intern / graduate trainee.
Back in the Workshop, the guys watch a training video on welding one morning set up by Garret (standing), who is EMI’s first Workshop intern / graduate trainee.
Jess shares about the rainwater system ‘first flush’ experiments she has been working on with the R&D team. The Uganda R&D programme has become an exciting placement for EMI’s mechanical engineering internship applicants.
Meanwhile, over the fence on the airfield, students from a primary school get a tour of an MAF aircraft.
Lunch break for a group of EMI staff under the trellis at the airfield gate.
(L-R) Pauline, Thuly, Karolien, and Matthew have a laugh during their four-day workshop on EMI communications and development. Aside from the trainings, for South Africans Thuly and Karolien, seeing EMI’s Uganda operation and work in the field was invaluable.
Our family on the bridge to EMI Uganda’s front door. We so enjoyed our summer with the team and thank God for this amazing opportunity.
