The EMI Directors Conference, 2024

Note: This year EMI’s worldwide Directors met in Spain for our annual conference. The geographically central and visa-accessible European country allowed everyone to get there this year. Here are some of my favorite photos from our unifying week together.

Walking off jetlag on one of the pedestrian avenues in Malaga, Spain.
This woman was out for a stroll with her little dog. Then she stopped at this lonely café to enjoy a cigarette and a beer in the afternoon sun.
People come to Malaga to enjoy the sunlight, which is celebrated in shading structures like these.
In the Directors conference presentation room without any natural light, it was possible for some presenters to hide in the dark behind their slides.
EMI CEO John Dallmann came into the light to talk about leadership posture — recognising the desire to control and choosing to respond by trusting God.
Graham modeling something in front of a public color structure along the coastal walkway.
Pre-dawn light on the Mediterranean sun coast. It was still pretty chilly in late February, but that didn’t stop us taking freezing dips in the sea.
Whitewash, planter pots, shrine, and wires. I loved the address tiles embedded in the plaster.
Imagine wandering in this beautiful micro forest of succulent flowering trees.
Most business sessions conclude like this. After topic exposition, working groups talk through specific questions, noting their ideas and discussion flow on a flipchart sheet, finally sharing some of their findings with the entire group. Here we are dealing with the vexing problem of autonomy & standardisation across EMI.
Chris shares about dedicating staff and resources for WASH efforts in Cambodia. His recycled protest photo overstates the point, but there is real desire in EMI’s civil engineering ranks to go beyond the walls of institutions to work with communities to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Of course, I’m not sure we could expect to find architects on a street protesting ‘no more septic tank designs’…
Overlooking the mountain town of Mijas, which a few of us explored on our day off.
By the middle of this year, Kendra will assume Director responsibilities at EMI MENA — our first female Office Director.
The entrance to the bullfighting ring in Mijas, just across the plaza from the church.
I enjoyed how UK Director Stephen lived into his graphic demonstrating how investment in good design yields increasing financial returns over decades.
Candid moment at a working group table. This could be what EMI Directors look like when they have absolutely no idea what they’re meant to do…
